Pomp and Circumstantial Evidence

Today was Paul's big day. The weather was absolutely beautiful this morning for the graduation ceremonies for the University of Utah S. J. Quinney College of Law. Paul and I showed up bright and early to take a few photos before he had to line up in reverse-alphabetical order and I had to go in to Kingsbury Hall and save seats.

This is the law school library at the U of U where Paul spent hours studying, socializing, and working on articles for the Utah Law Review.

Adam and Paul - Best Buddies forever.

My dashing husband with family in tow looking very pleased with his accomplishment.

After the commencement ceremony there was a small reception for the graduates and their families on the lawn, then we went out for lunch at a wonderful restaurant in the Gateway Center called Thaifoon. I'm so proud of Paul for all the hard work he put into law school over the past three years.

My Mortal Enemy

I confess that I have a lifelong love affair with goal-setting. Big goals, little goals, long-term goals, short-term goals, goals I achieve, and goals I never really intend to keep (which I know Stephen Covey or some other self-help guru would wince and tell me that those are not goals in the first place. To them I blow a raspberry). Sometimes I tell people about my goals and sometimes I don't. I set goals every day - I will run 30 minutes nonstop at 6.0 mph today, I will not eat any cookies today (example of a goal I never really intend to keep), I will clean the bathroom (today's goal).

Goal-setting proclivities have gotten me through really tough times in my life and helped me accomplish some major things. Like running a marathon, doing well in law school, seeing some of the most incredible places on earth, and having some really wonderful friendships. Yes, I have had to overcome my social awkwardness by occasionally setting goals to talk to random strangers (a favorite goal that I haven't thought about lately) or make new friends.

This whole goal-setting tendency must have been hard-wired into my brain somewhere before birth because I have always been this way. Even when I was five years old and my parent's could not get me to stop sucking my thumb, I finally overcame that bad habit by setting a goal for myself to quit and taking steps to achieve that goal by taking my favorite thumb-sucking blanket to my parent's room in the middle of the night and tearfully banishing it to the top shelf of their closet because I knew I couldn't achieve my goal with that beloved piece of childhood in my bed, tempting me.

But sometimes my goals get a little out of control. Its like my goals set themselves and I am standing on the roadside watching the Overachiever Train roll by, wondering who is this girl who came up with such a masochistic goal. Like all those times when I have decided that I am going to become ambidextrous. (why? I don't know, although I have always told myself that it would be very useful in case I ever had my right hand amputated - a huge phobia of mine).

This month I set a goal (without really meaning too - it was an out of control goal that set itself and then stared me defiantly in the face) to defeat my mortal enemy: Carrots. Don't laugh. Anyone who has known me long enough knows that I HATE carrots. For reals. My gag reflex comes into play whenever I eat one. I was force-fed cooked carrots as a child while staying with my grandparents when my parents were out of town (my mother never made me eat anything I was that averse to) and puked my guts out afterward. Haven't been able to stomach them ever since. Even in carrot cake or V-8 juice.

But I don't like the idea that a little orange vegetable that the rest of the world loves has this kind of power over me. So the goal is to force myself to eat carrots all this month in order to become friends with carrots. I used a similar method on my mission with a companion who I didn't get along with very well at first. (No I didn't eat her, I just tricked myself into loving her by serving her and trying to love her until I woke up one day and realized that I finally really did love her. Sounds crazy, but it worked).

Starting with eating the shredded carrots in a salad rather than picking them out and working my way up, I have discovered that I prefer carrots raw rather than cooked. That doesn't mean I like them raw, but its a start, right? So I bought my first package of baby carrots, which I have always wanted to like because they are so cute. And I have been chowing down. And by chowing I mean that I am up to being able to get down five, that's right folks, FIVE carrots a day now. In one sitting. Then I reward myself with a cookie.

Bummer, Bonus, and Biggest Loser

The Bummer: My little sister Jessica's study-abroad to Guadalajara was cancelled due to the whole Swine Flu thing that was hugely blown out of proportion. So instead of heading to Mexico for the summer to study Spanish and volunteer by teaching blind kids to swim, she is going to be at home working at a flower shop.

The Bonus: Since Jessica had already paid for plane tickets to Mexico and couldn't get a refund, she rescheduled her flight to go to Cancun with me and Paul in a couple weeks. We are SO excited and it is going to be such a fun trip with her. She has never really been out of the country before (just to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls), but her espanol is muy bueno. We are looking forward to traipsing around ruins at Chichen Itza, Tulum and Uxmal, swimming in cenotes, taking lots of photos, and enjoying the Yucatan area. Here's hoping we don't catch any nasty flu bugs while we are there.

The Biggest Loser: Isn't this show just the best? I have to admit I get a little choked up some weeks when the contestants work so hard and do so well at something they have struggled to overcome. Paul told me that this week's episode where the contestants ran/walked a full marathon really inspired him to work out more. Seeing the emotion as they crossed the finish line after doing 26.2 miles brought back so many memories for me of the marathon I ran just before starting law school. One of these days I am going to get serious and do another marathon. Can't wait to see how everyone looks next week in the finale.

Three random things and a list of things I currently adore

Random thing 1: Back when I was dating Paul, he had a roommate named Mayo who was on BYU's ballroom dance team. Mayo is a super-nice, totally fun guy. He is also an amazing dancer. Right now, he is competing for a spot as a professional on the next season of "Dancing with the Stars". He made it into the top 4 last week with his waltz, and tonight he is dancing either jive or quickstep. So please, please watch the show tonight and go to this site to vote for Mayo! He's kind of at a disadvantage because two of the other four finalists have siblings who have already danced on the show as professionals.

Random thing 2: I came home last week after a final and Paul was sitting on the couch watching "Snakes on a Plane" on TBS. He made me watch just a part of the movie where the actual script had been dubbed over to replace some of the language. The revised line was (and picture a really angry and fed up Samuel Jackson saying this): "I am SICK and TIRED of these MONKEY-FIGHTING snakes on this MONDAY-TO-FRIDAY plane!!" You can probably guess what language was replaced for the sake of cable tv. Paul and I were cracking up over this hilarious line in what Paul says was a totally stupid movie. And we have been quoting it at random moments ever since. Try it, you'll like it.

Random thing 3: My friend Carrie pointed out in a comment to my last post that Paul and I were thinking about going to Mexico. We actually have reservations to head to Cancun in mid-May and for now, we are still planning to go even with the whole swine flu thing that is happening. The way we see it, there are still a couple of weeks for the problem to sort itself out and hopefully by the time we head down there things will be under control. But I am super worried that my little sister's study-abroad program in Guadalajara is going to be cancelled. She is supposed to leave in a week to study at a university there and also to volunteer as a swim instructor for blind kids. I am praying really hard for her. First that she still gets to go, and second that if she does go that she won't get sick.

And finally, I just wanted to share some of the things that currently are making me happy:
1. Coconut-almond cream cheese frosting on chocolate cupcakes
2. My bright yellow shoes
3. Tacos al pastor from divey little Mexican joints in SLC
4. Wearing cotton skirts in the warm spring weather
5. Staying up past midnight
6. Having a sunroof in our new car
7. Watching reality tv without any guilt that I should be studying instead
8. Fresh, sweet red strawberries
9. Having hair that is long enough to easily put into a ponytail
10. Sunshine
