Can you please explain...

Why people in California put up those icicle Christmas lights that don't actually look like icicles?  This is causing me serious consternation because our neighbors on both sides AND across the street all have those icicle lights.  I really just don't understand it.  First, because they don't actually look very much like icicles.  Second, because it does not snow here.  Not that I have anything against icicle lights in general - just the idea of them in a warm climate.

Also, the neighbors to the right of our house have a Santa on a Harley.  The neighbors to the left have an illuminated flamingo and palm tree.  With icicle lights.  Again, the whole thing seems a little strange.  But maybe that's just me.

  1. Amy, you always ask the tough questions. I've thought about this a lot, and here are my thoughts: I think it is more inappropriate to have fake icicles where they actually have real icicles than where they don't. Also, your neighbors do seem a little crazy. :)

  2. I think you need to one up them. Icicle lights, santa on the roof, reindeer on the lawn and maybe some inflatable candy canes! Oh this could be fun. ;)

  3. Dorothy is right. Having lived in a warm and essentially snow free climate for the majority of my life (and all but two Christmases), icicle Christmas lights are the only thing resembling snow or ice that we get most years. However, white (or possibly blue) are the only colors that make sense to me: who ever heard of multi-colored icicles?

Does your neighbor have the icicle lights on the palm tree? That is definitely weird.

  5. Amy- clearly when your neighbors went to the store, the stores were all out of the Christmas lights that resemble a light frost, which would of course been more climate appropriate. Also the 'light frost' christmas lights are so tiny and hard to see, it would not have gone with the tacky and over the top theme they already had going on.

  6. Good thing I read this post or I would be totally embarrassed. I will just have to make sure to take down all of our icicles, our electronic reindeer, the penguins, and the big inflatable snow globe with santa inside before you guys get here!
